This weekend YouTube TV subscribers are rejoicing now that Disney channels are back online after a two-week blackout that was tense and left millions of users without their favorite shows and sports content. The controversy, which started on October 30, eventually ended with a multi-year carriage deal between Google and Disney.​

What Caused the Blackout?

The blackout began as the two media houses failed to reach an agreement on licensing fees and carriage conditions. YouTube TV reported that Disney was asking too high terms that would push customers to spend more money, whereas Disney asserted that Google was unwilling to pay a reasonable rate for premium content such as ESPN and ABC. Both organizations were publicly pointed fingers, with Disney demanding that ABC be temporarily restored to cover the election, which YouTube TV refused.​

Channels are back on Air

The entire Disney lineup is back on YouTube TV, including ESPN, ABC, National Geographic, FX, Freeform, SEC Network, and the ACC Network. Sports fans could not have a better timing because the deal was completed just before major college football games and professional sports coverage this weekend. The Disney Entertainment co-chairmen were satisfied with the deal, and they said they would provide exceptional entertainment.​

What does this Mean to Subscribers?

All the Disney content is now available back to YouTube TV subscribers paying $82.99 per month. The platform had promised a credit of 20 dollars, in case of a blackout lasting for a considerable amount of time, which was redeemed around November 9. This resolution is another step in the ongoing carriage dispute between streaming platforms and content providers.​
