Netflix has delivered a gem in a world that is desperate to get feel-good escapes. The newest release from powerhouse producer Tyler Perry, Ruth & Boaz, is available on September 26, 2025. This 91-minute religious romance turns the biblical Book of Ruth into a modern-day thriller It is not your Sunday school story. Rather, the fierce Serayah (of Empire) plays Ruth; an aspiring rapper who leaves Atlanta to run away the madness thereafter following the brutal murder of her boyfriend. She accompanies him with his grieving mother, Naomi- brilliantly portrayed by Phylicia Rashad of The Cosby Show fame to a sleepy Tennessee town.
There Ruth finds a gig at a luxurious winery belonging to the mysterious Bo Azra (Tyler Lepley, stealing scenes with P-Valley). Sparks fly fast. Bo’s charm? The haunting history of Ruth, however–considering vile intrigues and shady ex-connections– threatens to ruin their fledgling romance. Is Faith going to get them through the storm? It resonated with Perry, who collaborated with DeVon Franklin, and added the theme of redemption and divine timing. Jermaine Dupri and Babyface cameos add to that hip-hop soul, in honor of Ruth’s musical aspirations.
Critics are buzzing. Decider describes it as heartfelt and predictable, which highlights Rashad’s emotional depth while noting the script’s occasional preachiness. The fans on X are in rapture over the chemistry between Serayah and Lepley? It is going to be pure fire. This Tyler Perry Studios movie directed by Alanna Brown was filmed in Georgia last fall as part of his multi-picture Netflix deal.
