The transaction follows weeks of competitive bidding. Netflix gave offers of around 28 dollars per share for Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming assets. The company was successful over competing bids by Paramount and Comcast who were also bidding aggressively to acquire the entertainment conglomerate.

Inside the bidding battle

Paramount had initially bid about $27/share on the entire portfolio of Warner Bros Discovery. Comcast limited its offer to its streaming operations and studios. However, Netflix’s better offer won over WBD leadership. According to reports, the streaming service also included a very huge breakup fee of 5 billion dollars if regulators prevented the transaction.

It was announced in October that Warner Bros Discovery planned to find buyers. The company intends to separate its cable networks such as CNN, TNT and Discovery Channel before finalizing any sale.

What Does This Mean for Viewers?

The objective of the proposed acquisition is to lower the cost of streaming for consumers. Netflix will offer its service as a package with HBO Max, resulting in substantial savings. This multi-billion merger would put Netflix in charge of popular brands such as HBO, DC Comics, and the Harry Potter franchises.

Both companies may declare the deal in a few days. The deal is still pending regulatory clearance and is subject to scrutiny by legislators who are concerned about media consolidation. Senator Mike Lee called it possibly the biggest competition issue in a decade

This historic tie would make Netflix the undisputed world leader in the field of streaming entertainment.
