Animated by Sony Pictures Animation, it is based on the fierce group of girls Huntr/x – Rumi, Mira, and Zoey – who lead dual lives as pop idols and demon killers. The story begins with the demons of old who were subsisting on the souls of people under their king, Gwi-Ma. Jump to now, and Hunter/x fights a corrupt rival boy band, the Saja Boys. They are in fact demons disguised as such, seeking to steal fans and break the magical barrier. Rumi (voiced by Arden Cho) carries a dark secret: she is a demon and is losing her voice which creates a lot of dramatic effects. A conflicting demon rival, Jinu, is voiced by Ahn Hyo-seop, as Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) bring vitality to the story.
The movie directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans has beautiful visuals based on anime, K-dramas, and concert lights. It stars voices such as Lee Byung-hun, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Yunjin Kim. Original songs have been a massive hit on the charts – the soundtrack has been number 1 on Billboard with four in the top 10.
Since its release, it has been the most-watched Netflix movie of all time with 236 million views, surpassing Red Notice. The August 23-24 sing-along version earned theaters $19.2 million and was the number one film at the US box office. Critics are enthusiastic about its graphics, humor, and cultural references.
