Suzanne Morrison, the mother of Perry, and his stepfather Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison, reported that they felt like that ‘deep well’ had no bottom in sight. They identified Plasencia as “among the most culpable of all”, among the five individuals who had been criminally charged in the case of Perry’s death.
The couple expressed they were heartbroken that their son never received his “third act” when he struggled with substance abuse over the years. “His story moved so many people. And he wanted, needed, and deserved a third act. It was in the planning. And then, those jackals,” they wrote in their statement.
John Bennett Perry (the biological father of Perry) and stepmother Debby also filed their own victim impact letter. They wrote that Plasencia didn’t “deserve to hear our feelings”, and “Matthew’s recovery counted on you saying NO”. The couple requested the court to sentence the doctor to a sentence beyond the required time.

The popular actor passed away at 54 due to acute effects of ketamine, among other causing factors such as drowning and coronary artery disease. Plasencia pleaded guilty to selling 20 vials of ketamine to Perry and his assistant between the late of September and October 12, 2023.
Suzanne and John were divorced prior to Matthew turning one year old. As a child in Ottawa, Canada, Perry lived with his mother, who was the press secretary for Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. When he was a teenager, Perry moved to California to live with his actor father.
