The highly anticipated biographical boxing drama movie ‘Christy’, by Sydney Sweeney has left the film industry with one of the worst wide release openings in the history of the film. The numbers tell a sad story. The movie made only 600,000 on its first day Friday, on 2,184 screens, and it came in at number 10 on the domestic charts. This made it one of the 10 worst new release openings on over 2,000 screens in the history of cinema.

How bad is it really?
Industry experts have listed ‘Christy’ as the 9th worst domestic opening ever of a new release to open in 2,000+ theaters. The movie achieved 78% lower than “The Smashing Machine,” which was another recent boxing drama that had low box office performance. There were three films released during the pandemic period between April 2020 and May 2021 that had worse results than Christy, according to Box Office Mojo data.
Despite Sweeney being the most talked about actor on social media, viewers failed to draw the audience to the inspirational boxing movie. The film had tough competition from Predator: Badlands, which had a successful weekend at the box office.
What’s next for Christy?
Although the theatrical performance seems to be a commercial flop, the film still had some hope in the award-season. The performance of Sweeney in the film has received some Oscar buzz among industry insiders, but the nomination is not confirmed yet. It may be possible that in the next couple of weeks the movie will see a spike. But the chances are very less, which is based on the disastrous opening score.
