The brutal murder of Chrissy was the first big shock of the season. Eddie Munson, the leader of the Hellfire Club, was falsely charged with the crime. Fred and Patrick were also victims as Vecna kept on attacking them. The town went into panic, accusing Eddie and the Hellfire Club of a purported satanic cult. However, the true monster was Vecna, a twisted creature with a dark connection to Hawkins’ past.
Vecna’s Reign of Terror
The powers of Vecna were something the gang had never encountered. He attacked PTSD victims, taking them into nightmares and killing them in the most horrific manner possible. Nancy and Robin researched the history of the town and discovered the case of Victor Creel, whose family had been murdered in the 1950s by a “demon.” The hints were leading to the origins of Vecna, but the gang was running out of time.
Vecna’s next target would be Max. She wrote touching letters to her friends and family knowing that she would be next. Lucas, Dustin, and Steve took her to the grave of Billy in a desperate attempt, and she bid her farewell. Verna struck, but Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” rescued Max, pulling her back from the edge. The scene was a heartfelt one that couldn’t easily be forgotten.

Eddie’s Heroic Sacrifice
The story of Eddie is among the saddiest stories of the season. Being hunted by the town, and burdened with a feeling of guilt, he preferred to stand his ground. During the final battle, Eddie distracted the Vecna’s Demobats at the gate, sacrificing himself to rescue Hawkins. Dustin found him dying in the Upside Down, proud that he stood up for what was right. The death of Eddie broke the hearts of the fans but his courage will never be forgotten.
The Return of Hopper and the Ruin of Hawkins
At the same time the gang was battling Vecna, Joyce and Murray were on a mission to rescue Hopper in a Russian prison camp. Hopper came back to Hawkins after a daring escape, and reunited with Eleven in a tearful moment. However, victory was not expected. Hawkins was broken, Max was in a coma and Vecna was still out there. The season was concluded with the Upside Down bleeding into the real world, which is perfect for an epic conclusion to the show in Season 5.
