Original Creative Team Reunites
Steven Spielberg, the executive producer of the original Gremlins films, is coming back to the franchise, under his production house Amblin Entertainment. The screenwriter of the 1984 classic and director of hits such as Home Alone and Harry Potter, Chris Columbus, will direct and produce this third installment. The scripting team includes Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the creators of this year’s horror hit Final Destination: Bloodlines.
Why are Gremlins a cultural phenomenon?
The first Gremlins was released in 1984 as a dark holiday movie about Mogwais that transform into dangerous monsters when some rules are broken. It was a huge commercial hit, generating a total of 212 million dollars globally with only a budget of 11 million dollars. The movie was able to establish a rating of PG-13 together with Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom.
A sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, was released in 1990 but failed at the box office, grossing just 41 million. Since, the franchise has been inactive except for the animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and video game appearances.
Columbus had previously expressed his concerns about CGI usage in Gremlins, saying he wished to retain the “sense of anarchy” that practical puppetry creates. His involvement indicates that fans can anticipate some genuine creature effects instead of purely digital creations.
