The film, based on a stormy love affair in 1847, is a novel written by Emily Brontue; According to the book, Catherine Earnshaw (Robbie) and Heathcliff (Elordi) are the lovers in the film; the story starts with Catherine, a prim and proper woman lacking work experience, and Heathcliff, a brooding orphan. Their romantic relationship is fierce and toxic full of vengeance, class struggles, and heartbreak. Fennell’s vision? Be provocative, bold, and the opener is the already buzzing teaser by Charli XCX, Everything is Romantic.
Some fans are excited and others are upset about Elordi portraying Heathcliff as he is stated in the novel to be dark-skinned, which he is sparking “whitewashing”. People doubted the blonde hair of Robbie, as well as her age (she is 34, and Catherine is a teenager in other sections of the novel). Casting director Kharmel Cochrane justified the decision by stating that it is not just a book, it is all art.
Paparazzi pictures of Robbie in a more contemporary-looking wedding dress also raised eyebrows. The white gown, with its pouched sleeves and a crown, is more 1980s than 1800s, which makes purists skeptical. Nevertheless, the history of Promising Young Woman with Fennell is sure to have breathtaking scenes and a spin.
Warner Bros., this is an $80 million project produced by LuckyChap Entertainment that beat out Netflix for a theatrical release of $150 million. It will star Hong Chau and Alison Oliver, and it’s already looking like a must-watch. How do you feel about it? Will this be a hit or a flop?
